MR. CREED SMITH

SMITH, COL. CREED DELANEY, USA, (RET) 9/25/1927 to 10/04/2016 Creed D. Smith, age 89, went to be with the Lord on October 4, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara; uncle Claude DeLaney of Pittsburg, PA; sister, Francis Gloria Williams of Woodford, VA; brother Horace Smith of Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law, Cheryle Hill; three daughters, Gloria M. (Jewett) Steele, Barbara M. (Gary) Bell, Phyllis A. Savage; two sons, Creed D. (Rosalyn) Smith, Jr. and Boyd C. Smith; eight grandchildren, Gina Steele, Aimee (Torence) Steele-Powell, Amber (Nick) Steele-Hicks, Shannon Savage, Erin (Kenta) Kakizoe, Corinne Bell, Joshua Smith, Aaron Michael Zaragoza; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Creed was born in Brands, VA, to Mary Elizabeth and Philip Jerome Smith on September 25, 1927. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army serving three years active and four years in the reserve while attending college and receiving his BA at Agricultural and Technical College (A&T), Greensboro, NC; his CA Lab License, Salinas, CA; and his Masters at Stanford. In 1956, he received his Army commission (II Lieutenant) and continued his service in the Army. In 1966, he received his PhD from Iowa State, Ames, Iowa. In 1967, he was deployed to Vietnam. He returned in 1969 to serve at the 5th Army Medical Lab -- Fort Baker, CA, and Presidio of San Francisco, CA -- until he retired from the Army as a full Colonel in 1986. Creed was a Jack of all trades. He was an avid handball player, a meticulous gardener, had a great fondness for cars and loved traveling, and spending time with his family.
