Sarah Elizabeth (Simpson) Burt

Remembering the Spirit Of Sarah Elizabeth (Simpson) Burt November 22, 1935-August 28, 2019 Sarah Elizabeth Simpson, born November 22, 1935 in Vinegar Bend, Alabama, to Ms. Martha Grimes and Mr. Horace Simpson. She was delivered by a midwife who was also her Great Grandmother, Mrs. Emmeline Grimes. Sarah was the oldest of seven siblings and spent her early years in Vinegar Bend with her Grandmother, Mrs. Grimes who was raising her. There she attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Savior at Little Bethel Baptist Church. Sarah left Vinegar Bend, Alabama to live with her Father Mr. Horace Simpson in Cincinnati, Ohio. After a short period of time there, her mother moved the family to Mobile, Alabama. Sarah attended Central High School in Mobile, AL. where she played on the girls’ basketball team. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and sports. She was an avid seamstress and made most of the clothing her family wore. She also took an upholstery class and recovered furniture. She attended Bestia Beauty School and was a beautician for close friends and family. Sarah Simpson met a handsome young man named Bernard E. Richardson who she joined in matrimony on February 3, 1955. To this union five children were born. In June of 1965, the family relocated to Sacramento, California, where two additional children were born. Sarah and Bernard divorced but remained close friends. Sarah re-married (John Burt) until his death. Sarah operated an in-home daycare for several years; worked at Nordstrom Department Store and Almond Growers. She was a mother to her children as well as the children of her friends and neighbors. Sarah was very sociable and loved her family and friends. She had daily conversations with Charles Bailey, Juanita Simpson, Sears Holloway and others to check in and say hello. Even with periodic bouts of health issues, nothing could stop her from doing what she loved best, caring for her children and grandchildren. On August 28, 2019 when an Angel of GOD whispered come and take your rest, Sarah received her wings.
